Readers are Leaders
Readers are Leaders is the supplemental reading program at Arroyo Del Oso. One part of the program encourages and celebrates reading that is done outside of the classroom. Another part of the program promotes writing and publication of student writing. Nationwide and local literary events are recognized through school activities.
Book Giveaway
At the beginning of the year, each student is allowed to select a new book. It is an exciting way to get the school year's reading started.
Nightly Reading
All students participate in the Readers are Leaders nightly reading. Each student reads 25 minutes each night. Students are recognized at mid-trimester with certificates and treats. At the end of each trimester, the students who read the required minutes attend a special celebration.
Morning Reading Club
To help students attain the required minutes, the Morning Reading Club is held every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:25am to 8:55am. Volunteers read to the students and this provides a fun way for students to add one hour of reading per week to their minutes.
Family Arts, Literacy and Dessert Night
Reader are Leaders sponsors "Family Arts, Literacy and Dessert Night". The students and their families view art, participate in crafts, join storytellers and volunteer readers, take a picture with a book character and enjoy desserts.
Bear Mail
Bear Mail is our in-school mail service and this continues all year. The students learn how to write a letter, address envelopes and have the opportunity to use these skills as they write to students and staff throughout the school. Parents are invited to use this system to send letters to their children.
Publishing Center
The Publishing Center publishes students writings. Students' works are typed out and made into books. The Publishing Center is also responsible for designing documents, creating bulletin boards, recording special events through pictures and recognizing RAL students. Many of your child's projects go home with the creative touch of the Publishing Center.

Other Special Events
During the "Library Week," "Children's Book Week" and "Read Across America Day," students have a chance to win books and participate in other library events.
Thanks Volunteer Parents
Funding for all of these events, prizes, books and the Publishing Center are provided by the PTA at Arroyo Del Oso. Volunteer parents and teachers work together to make RAL a successful reading and writing program for the students.
