ATTENDANCE / TARDINESS

The Federal No Child Left Behind Act requires that states, school districts and school be held accountable for ensuring that all students meet high academic standards. On time, daily attendance is a critical component of this educational process.

When a student is absent from school for any reason, call before 10:00am on the day of the absence(505-821-9393 ext.5) Notes are acceptable when you know prior to the absence that your child will not attend on a certain day. An Attendance Clerk may call to verify absences.

Extended absences due to illness, family emergencies, etc., may be excused by one initial notification to the office.

Students between the ages of 5 and 18 years of age are mandated to attend public, private, or home school or a state institution. The APS District reports habitual truants to the Children's Court Liason's office and to the State of New Mexico.

Excessive tardiness inhibits the student's learning. Students with tardy problems will be refered to the office. Parent conferences may be requested to help arrive at solutions to tardiness.

Students who are signed out before the end of the instructional day must have written documentation of the reason or be subject to the same consequences as tardy.

*** If your child is too sick to go outside for recess, or has a fever, she/he is considered too sick to be at school.

STUDENT DRESS CODE

The following item was taken from the Student Code adopted by the School Board:

D. Dress

The Board of Education expects student dress and grooming to reflect high standards of personal conduct so that each student's attire promotes a positive, safe and healthy atmosphere within the school. Student dress may not present a health or safety hazard, violate municiple or state law or present a potential for disruption of the instructional program. Attire or accessories, which advertise, display or promote any drug, including alcohol or tobacco, sexual activity, violence, disrespect and/or bigotry towards any group are not acceptable. Unacceptable clothing and accessories include, but are not limited to, gang related attire, excessively tight or revealing clothes, short shorts, bare midriff, low-cut, and/or off the shoulder blouses, spiked jewelry, chains, and belts with mroe than 2 inches excess. As a matter of common courtesy and respect, hats/cpas are not worn while inside building except when there are specific instructions, safety, religious or medical reasons.

Schools may customize their individual dress codes to address the needs and standard of their communities and neighborhoods through the use of a process shich ensures input from the students, faculty and staff of the school and other interested community members. Students and their parents/guardians have the responsibility to be aware of school specfific dress codes and to conform to those requirements. The responsibility to interpret and enforce the policy rests with each principal for his/her school.

NOTE: Students are not allowed to wear roller-skate shoes or "spaghetti strap" tops to Arroyo Del Oso.

HEALTH, IMMUNIZATION & MEDICATION

CLASSROOM TRANSFERS

ADO's philosophy is that every child needs to develop the ability to a changing society and to the different personalities in that society. Based on this philosophy, parents who perceive their children to be having problems in a particular classroom need to follow this specific procedure.

STEP 1
The current teacher and parent will hold a conference to identify concerns, establish communication and take positive steps to address areas of concern. It is recommended that written documentation be maintained prior to STEP 2
STEP 2
Parent make an appointment with the principal for classroom observation
STEP 3
Teacher and parent will request a conference with the principal after other positive and cooperative avenues are exhausted. A two-week minimum attendance in the classroom may be required prior to STEP 4
STEP 4
The principal will, after ascertaining that prior steps have been followed, decide whether the student will remain with the present teacher or be transferred to another classroom
STEP 5
If a transfer is to be effected; the teacher with the lowest pupil-to-teacher ratio will receive the student (except ESL Students)

Student Transfers

If, at any time during the school year, your student transfers to another school, please notify the office in advance to allow sufficient time to complete the necessary paperwork. All textbooks and library books must be returned to ADO prior to withdrawal. Cafeteria accounts must be paid in full.

Volunteer Guidelines

Children need to have good role models and warm loving adults around to work with them. If you have a little extra time and the desire, your assistance will be greatly appreciated. To best meet the needs of the children, the following guidelines are recommended:

  1. Parents may work in theclassroom at the teacher's request. All reprimands and discipline of students should be referred to the teacher. If there is any problem with any of the students, it should be brought to the teacher's attention so s(he) can handle any situation. If there is a problem with the ownership of an item, the item should be given to the teacher.

  2. When the teacher is giving instructions, all children are to be seats listening. Asking a parent to go to the restroom, get drinks, etc. may not excuse them. If it is urgent, the children are to interrupt the teacher. It is imperative that parents remain quiet when the teacher is speaking with the class in order to model listening skills and prevent students from being distracted.

  3. Parents wishing to work on any machine in the workroom must attend one of the training sessions that will be provided by ADO. Supplies in the workroom are for school use only.

  4. If a parent is collecting money fora teacher (i.e., class parties, etc.) the parent must caount the money with the teacher and the teacher should initial the money envelope. There is a safe in the school office in which to keep collected money. The office staff can assist you with this.

  5. A parent may be asked not to work in the classroom or may be asked not to accompany the class in field trips, etc., (at any time) at the teacher's discretion.

Any parent who wants to collect money without teacher approval (i.e. teacher's gift) is accountable for money collected. At least two parents should count and validate amounts of money collected and accurate records reflecting what money was collected should be kept. No parent may benefit financially from money collected.

ADO appreciates very much any help from parents. Please plan on attending the monthly PTA meetings where you will meet other parents unterested in making the elementary school experience a positive one. There are so many ways you can help your child's teacher, whether you come in during the school day or help with projects that can be completed at home. WE THANK YOU FOR PLACING VOLUNTEERISM HIGH IN YOUR PRIORITY LIST!
